2024 Articling Student Survey Results

The Law Society of Alberta have reported the results of the 2024 Articling Student Survey, which was done in follow up to the 2019 Articling Student Survey. The survey was done in partnership with the Law Society of British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. It was sent to articling students, new lawyers, principals, mentors, and recruiters within the above jurisdictions, and addressed ongoing concerns with equity, diversity, inclusion, and lawyer competency.

The results revealed the following key findings:

  1. Half of respondents who completed articling reported feeling prepared or very prepared for practice overall, which is an improvement from the 2019 results.
  2. Approximately one in three reported experiencing discrimination or harassment during articling and/or recruitment, which is comparable to the 2019 results.

The Law Society remains dedicated to creating a more equitable, supportive, and safer environment for articling students and new lawyers. For a more in-depth analysis on the survey results, click here to read the full report.
