Lawyers are obliged under the Anti-Money Laundering Model Rules to identify their individual and organizational clients before providing any legal service. This course will help you learn the rules surrounding client identification and verification to ensure you are in compliance.
This course is intended to assist you in learning your professional responsibility rules. On completion, you should have an understanding of the rules and structure of the Code of Conduct. You should be able to identify what has changed, where the rules can be located within the Code of Conduct, and how these rules apply to your practice.
A friend, colleague or family member may appear to be in distress. You may want to help but you may be hesitant for a number of reasons, including: “I don’t know what to do or what to say”.
This free course is designed to give you the knowledge and the confidence to have the conversation with someone who may be struggling with personal issues and to refer them to an appropriate source of help.
By the end of this course, you should be able to explain why it is necessary to protect trusts funds, and describe how the Law Society of Alberta’s initiatives ensure the safety of trust funds for you and your firm. You should also be able to safely carry out some common trust account-related activities, and to outline some basic steps to minimize risks for you and your firm.
While the first course focused on the basics of trust accounting, this second course focuses on trust accounting for the Responsible Lawyer.
By the end of this course, you should be able to outline the responsibilities of a Responsible Lawyer. You should also be able to perform a trust accounting risk assessment, implement and monitor controls to manage risks, and maintain required books and records.

This is a volunteer training course for the Alberta Debtor Support Project. We are pleased to welcome you as a volunteer for this incredible initiative and are honoured to provide the training materials to better assist you as you apply your time, talent, and energy to this project. This course consists of 4 modules and provides a refresher on foreclosure law, insolvency, debtor/creditor law, and training to best assist individuals dealing with a high amount of stress. This course is complimentary.
