LESA was saddened to hear of the passing of the Honourable William Alexander Stevenson, OC, LLD on July 7, 2021. Justice Stevenson had a remarkable legal career and was a prominent part of LESA’s history, serving as one of the visionary individuals who created LESA in 1975.
Justice Stevenson was an alumnus of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, where he founded the Alberta Law Review and served as its first editor-in-chief. He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1992 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996.
Justice Stevenson was appointed to the Alberta District Court in 1975, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in 1979, the Court of Appeal of Alberta in 1980, and the Supreme Court of Canada in 1990. During his impressive career, he also spent several years as a University of Alberta professor, and co-authored the widely used Civil Procedure Encyclopedia.
Justice Stevenson was an accomplished jurist and his passion for the law and legal education will be fondly remembered.
