LESA is hosting many exciting professional development opportunities throughout the 2023-2024 educational calendar year. This blog post spotlights our upcoming in-person/livestream programs planned for the fall.

Search & Seizure and Digital Spaces

Search & Seizure and Digital Spaces explores the boundaries of privacy under section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the recent developments in search & seizure jurisprudence. Topics include: issues of standing and consent searches of digital devices, police surveillance of digital media, data, and biometrical information, advancing section 8 applications in complex criminal cases, ethical considerations in section 8 litigation, and more.

Commercial Litigation Symposium

Geared towards experienced commercial litigators, this program will incorporate roundtable and presenter-led large group discussions on a variety of topics, including Anton Piller Orders, Norwich Orders and evidence from non-parties, oppression claims, derivative actions, and more. Though designed for senior commercial litigators, lawyers who have been practicing in this area for several years could benefit from sitting in on these discussions as well.

Practice Foundations: Estate Administration

This program will examine estate administration procedures for “standard” estates and highlight potential issues for estates with unique considerations; identify common challenges and traps in estate administration and develop strategies to resolve or prevent them; explore ethical issues that can arise during estate administration, including conflicts of interest, confidentiality and privacy, and fiduciary duties owed by personal representatives and/or lawyers; and consider communication and client relationship management skills/techniques for navigating estate administration matters.

Dealing with High Conflict Personalities

Dealing with High Conflict Personalities will teach legal professionals how to connect with, manage, and respond to high conflict personalities (HCPs). Behaviours that increase conflict can occur it many different settings, including legal disputes, divorce, in the workplace, or in personal relationships. Understanding how to connect with, manage, and respond to high conflict personalities is critical for today’s lawyers. This program provides helpful strategies for how to set limits on HCPs behavior, how to maintain a positive relationship with HCPs, and more.

Collateral Issues in Family Law

Collateral Issues in Family Law will discuss trauma in a family law context, the mechanics of the Arbitration Act, and more.

This program is offered in Calgary or online via Livestream on December 1 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
