The Court of Appeal of Alberta has announced the appointment of Honourable Justice Tamara Friesen (Edmonton), and Honourable Justice Joshua B. Hawkes (Calgary).
Justice Friesen was called to the Alberta bar in 2002 and worked as a Crown prosecutor with Alberta Justice until 2010. For six years, she practiced at Nugent Law office in the areas of labour, employment, constitutional, and administrative law. Justice Friesen held positions as Director of Legal Research and Writing at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law and as legal counsel with the Law Society of Alberta. Justice Friesen was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 2019.
Justice Hawkes graduated from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law in 1990. Throughout his career, he held various positions in criminal appellate law. Justice Hawkes also made appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Alberta Court of Appeal. In 2017, he was appointed to the Alberta Court of Justice and in 2020, he became Assistant Chief Justice for the Calgary Criminal and Regional Division of Court. As one of the first members of the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service with a significant physical disability, Justice Hawkes is committed to improving accessibility within the justice system.
