As part of their clients’ estate planning, lawyers often provide advice related to advance care planning. Yet, the intersecting roles of lawyers and health care providers in this area creates uncertainty. What happens with your clients’ personal directives (PDs) in health care settings? How can you optimize the likelihood that their wishes will be honoured?
Using scenarios crafted by a palliative care physician, clinical ethicists, Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) subject matter experts and senior wills & estates lawyers, our panelists discuss factors that influence implementation and interpretation of PDs and recommend practices to better align legal practice to clinical reality.
