Articling 101: Free Online Course Now Available

We’re excited to announce a free online course called “Articling 101” designed to provide you with the foundational skills needed to build a successful law practice. Lessons explore the basics of practice management, provide an introduction to litigation and solicitor matters, and discuss how to ensure a smooth transition from student to lawyer.

Course Overview

Lesson 1 | Introduction to Practice Management 

  • Essential skills for building and sustaining a law practice include file, time, and client management, which are all subsets of practice management. This lesson will provide you with the foundation to build your practice managment skills so you can effectively manage your clients and files.

Lesson 2 | Introduction to Litigation Matters 

  • Practicing litigation can be stressful and demanding. As a litigator, you will be tasked with resolving significant problems for your clients (personal, financial, business, etc.). Client expectations are often that you will resolve issues quickly, cost-effectively, and correctly. This lesson will introduce you to strategies for effectively managing disputes.

Lesson 3 | Introduction to Solicitor Matters

  • Solicitors can be tasked with a wide variety of matters including drafting documents, advising clients, negotiating with clients and other lawyers, and conducting various transactions. This lesson will introduce you to strategies for effectively managing your solicitor matters.

Lesson 4 | Transitioning from Student to Lawyer

  • There are many changes associated with making the transition from articling student to practicing lawyer. This lesson will provide you with strategies for effectively transitioning from student to lawyer in Alberta. This lesson provides tips for building a successful law practice with discussions on finding clients, networking, and marketing your brand.

This course can be done online and entirely at your own pace. At the conclusion of each lesson, a list of recommended on-demand programs and papers are provided.
