March marks the beginning of Irish Heritage Month in Canada. This month we reflect on the significant contributions that Irish Canadians have made to our culture, history, and society.
Irish immigrants first arrived to Canada in the 17th century, many of which were fleeing extreme poverty and famine. Their resilience as a community allowed them to thrive in Canada, despite the discrimination they experienced. Today, 4.5 million Canadian’s can trace their origins to Irish ancestry, representing nearly 15% of our total population.
March also holds significance to the Irish community, as it is the month that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated. Irish Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the contributions that the Irish community have made to the fabric of our society, while also recognizing their resilience and perseverance as a community. The LESA team wishes the Irish Canadian community a happy Irish Heritage Month!
As we celebrate one another’s cultures, traditions, and histories, and as more and more workplaces develop anti-racism policies and look to shift their systems and culture, it is imperative that lawyers who handle employment, human rights, or workplace investigation matters stay up to date on the law and related practice. Our Anti-Racism in Employment Law on-demand program explores relevant human rights jurisprudence and practical strategies relating to policies, employee training, and reporting systems through the lens of cognitive bias and theory.
