Muslims across Canada have been observing Ramadan since February 28, 2025. Ramadan is a holy month for the Muslim community, and lasts approximately 30 days. As part of this sacred month, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, and then break their fast with an evening meal shared amongst loved ones. This month is a time for Muslims to strengthen their connection with God through fasting and prayer. It’s also an opportunity to reaffirm their shared values of compassion, gratitude, peace, and kindness.
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr. Eid is the Arabic word for “festival” or “celebration.” It is a three day period where Muslims celebrate with family and loved ones through Du’a or “prayer”, sharing gifts, wearing their best clothes, and through donation. This year, Eid will be celebrated on either March 30 or March 31 depending on the sighting of the moon.
We recognize that discrimination is still faced by many, and reiterate the importance of educating ourselves on different religions, cultures, and communities. The Government of Canada has recently released the Canadian Guide to Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia: For a more inclusive Canada, which is aimed at helping individuals, policy makers, and organizations address Islamophobia in Canada. This month and beyond, we are invited to learn more about the Muslim faith and to continue to foster inclusivity, kindness, and understanding for all Canadians.
The LESA team warmly wishes the Muslim community across Canada Eid Mubarak!
