Effective September 1, 2023, Justice James A. Hunter has been appointed chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice.
Chief Justice Hunter takes over from the Chief Justice Derek G. Redman and has been appointed for a seven-year term. Justice Redman will continue to sit as a justice in Alberta.
Justice Hunter graduated law school from the University of Alberta in 1988. In 2001, he started his own practice where he worked until his appointment to the Alberta Court of Justice in 2009. In 2014, Justice Hunter was named the assistant peace justice. In 2021, he was assigned to oversee the Justice of the Peace Program.
