Did you know that Alberta implemented a new organ donation registry in the spring of 2014?
Today’s blog shares a video of the Honourable Justice B. Browne speaking a few months ago to seminar attendees at LESA’s New Estate Administration Act seminar about the life giving decision people can make when they register as organ donors.
In this video, you’ll see Justice Browne share her moving personal story about how the gift of organ donation saved her life. She also provided a letter with registration information, statistics about organ donation, and personal stories of thankfulness from herself and Kevin Lynch. Both have received life saving organ donations and want to encourage others to consider becoming donors. One way they do this is through an organ donation information letter that provides lawyers – especially those working in wills & estates – with information to share with their clients. This letter is intended to help inform you and your clients, so don’t hesitate to share it.
Here are some compelling facts that Justice Browne shared with us about the state of organ donation:
- 1 in 3 people waiting for lung transplant die while on the waiting list.
- The prairie provinces have lowest organ donation rate in Canada.
- In 2014 the University of Alberta performed 46 lung transplants.
- As of July 31, the University of Alberta has completed 41 lung transplants in 2015; if this number climbs to more than 50 this year, they will be in top 10 in the world.
