Long-time LESA volunteer Sandra Schulz QC was appointed as Master in the Court of Queen’s Bench on July 25, 2013 and was sworn-in by Associate Chief Justice J.D. Rooke on October 28, 2013.
Sandra was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1983, appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994, and received her Masters in Law (ADR Specialization) in 2006. She has also been awarded the national designation of Chartered Mediator.
For approximately 20 years, Sandra conducted a litigation practice (mainly personal injury, commercial, estate and family law) before becoming a full time mediator, arbitrator, and meeting facilitator.
Teaching is a big part of Sandra’s life. In addition to teaching Dispute Resolution at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta and being a guest speaker on many related topics, Sandra has been involved in teaching for the CPLED Program (and for the former Bar Admission Program) for many years.
“It seems like I have always been a LESA volunteer. I have been volunteering as far back as I can remember,” explains Sandra. “It’s something that I have always thought is an important part of what we do. Teaching the Bar Admission and CPLED Courses, and speaking at seminars has always been part of practicing law for me.”
Sandra enjoys giving presentations at LESA seminars, especially when she sees people have “aha” moments.
“Most litigators like to be in front of a group of people. It’s fun to do it,” says Sandra.
As for her new role as Master at Court of Queen’s Bench in Edmonton, Sandra is looking forward to helping people in a new way. She plans to follow the same method that Master Lou Hyndman, Q.C. used with students.
“He was always kind and helpful to students, and if you were getting it wrong in front of him, he spent the time to tell you the right way to do it and tell you what he needed to hear to grant your application. Then he would have you do it over again until you got it right. He was a wonderful man,” says Sandra. “I am hoping to take that kind of approach with the students when they come in front of me to the extent that I can. It’s a constant learning process, but it’s also a sharing of information with the students that are in front of you.”
LESA is grateful for the countless hours Sandra has dedicated to both the CPLED Program and the Live Events, and we wish her continued success in her new role.
