The Drafting Contracts online module, which begins today, is the last module that CPLED students complete in 2013. The remaining online components – Written Advice & Advocacy, Practice Management, and Ethics & Professionalism – are scheduled for early 2014.
Drafting Contracts gives CPLED students the opportunity to practise the skills of writing, drafting, and problem-solving in the context of several different types of contracts.
Renee Zmurchyk, who is beginning her second year as a Learning Group Facilitator for the CPLED Program, recently resigned from her position at Canadian Pacific Railway to be a full-time mom. Still, she keeps busy volunteering with Calgary Legal Guidance, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at South Health Campus (“no legal advice for the babies – just cuddling”), and the CPLED Program.
Something that Renee appreciates most about the online modules is how practical the assignments are.
“The CPLED course does a great job of helping students with their practical skills,” explains Renee. “It also forces them to move away from the law school-type writing and start drafting in a more practical, client-focused manner. It hones the skill that every lawyer should have – the ability to figure out any legal subject matter and convey it at the appropriate level.”
LESA is grateful to Renee Zmurchyk and all the CPLED Learning Group Facilitators who willingly donate their time. Their time and dedication allow the CPLED Program to continue to provide high-quality legal education for articling students.
