Drafting Wills is the next online module CPLED students are getting set to start on October 3. This module includes one of the seven competency evaluations students will complete in the online environment.
Learning Group Facilitator Tanis Jalbert sees the Drafting Wills module as a great introduction to wills and estates. Tanis, who has instructed at MacEwan University and practiced exclusively in the wills and estate area, has been working with CPLED students since September 2012 and assisted in preparing material for the Drafting Wills module.
“The CPLED materials are comprehensive and easy to understand,” says Tanis. “The Drafting Wills module provides students with hands-on experience in the wills area that will assist them in their articling year and beyond.”
In fact, Tanis believes the CPLED materials are an excellent resource for students not only working through the Drafting Wills module, but also throughout their articling year.
“The assignments and competency evaluation are exactly what articling students may be asked by a wills lawyer to do,” explains Tanis. “The memo and client questionnaire are very realistic in terms of the information lawyers receive from clients.”
The Drafting Wills module gives students practice using the information given to adapt precedent resources to draft a will that meets the needs and wishes of individual clients. The assignments and competency evaluation also alert the students to issues that arise in assisting a wills client. Tax planning issues, guardianship of children, beneficiary designated assets are some examples of issues that students need to consider and understand.
“I encourage the students to take the time to do the assignments and use the feedback from experienced lawyers in this area to learn more and develop their knowledge in the wills area. There is no better way to learn than by doing, and that is exactly what the Drafting Wills module allows the students to do,” says Tanis.
CPLED students continue to gain valuable knowledge from experienced lawyers who take the time to mentor them. Thanks to Tanis Jalbert and all the Learning Group Facilitators and volunteers who make the CPLED Program a success.
