The Philippe Kirsch Institute is holding an inaugural event entitled Domestic Application of International Law: What Lawyers Need to Know. The event, which will be held in Toronto (in English) on November 19, 2013, and in Montreal (in French) on November 21, 2013, will also be available as a livestream webinar and archived recording for participation across Canada.
The English session is CPD accredited by the Law Society of Upper Canada for 0.5 professionalism hours and 2.25 substantive hours; the French session is accredited by the Barreau du Québec for three hours.
Session Overview
- Justice Philippe Kirsch, former judge of the International Criminal Court, will discuss how international criminal law is being applied in domestic courts around the world.
- The Honourable Ian Binnie, former judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, will provide an overview of how international law is being applied in Canadian courts and how this has evolved.
- Raj Anand, Partner at WeirFoulds LLP, will look at how international law is applied in human rights law in Canada
- Tina Lie, Partner at Paliare Roland Barristers, will discuss private international law concepts that come into play when seeking redress for offences committed abroad
The Philippe Kirsch Institute
The Philippe Kirsch Institute is a social enterprise that offers continuing professional development programs in criminal, civil, immigration, human rights and international law. The curriculum is delivered by a high profile faculty, including some of Canada’s top law experts in the fields. All generated proceeds fund a non-profit organization (the CCIJ) that supports survivors of war crimes in seeking redress and in bringing perpetrators to justice.
