In memory of the late Phyllis A. Smith KC, the LESA blog would like to pay our deepest respects and recognize her distinguished contributions to the Alberta legal profession.
In 1975, Phyllis was called to the bar. She was a Bencher from 1981 to 1991 and led a practice focused on civil litigation and administrative law. In 1991, Phyllis was appointed as the president of the Law Society of Alberta and was the first woman to hold this title.
Throughout her career, Phyllis was also a dedicated LESA volunteer. She was a recipient of several awards including the Edmonton Bar Association Distinguished Service Award (1993), the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch) and Law Society of Alberta Distinguished Service Award (1999), and a Women in Leadership Law award (2015).
Phyllis was a pillar in the Alberta legal community, and her contributions and accomplishments will be remembered for many years to come. We extend our deepest sympathies to Phyllis’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this time.
