If you’re a practitioner with five or more years of experience in the area of child welfare and you want to keep current in the area of law, LESA’s Child Welfare seminar in February will be of special interest to you.
Seminar Chair Sonja Lusignan of Campbell O’Hara has been practising family law since 2005, with most of her experience in divorce and child welfare law. She has represented both parents and children involved in child welfare proceedings
“It’s a very interesting and rewarding area of the law,” says Sonja. “A lot of the parents I have worked with were having multiple issues at the same time – substance abuse issues, poverty, mental health issues, and domestic violence. So it was challenging and rewarding. Then, about five years ago, I started representing children in child welfare proceedings.”
Like Sonja, the presenters at the Child Welfare seminar have experience in this area and will present the following topics:
- New Developments: A View from the Bench with Hon. Assist. Chief Judge L.K. McLellan
- Legislative Changes with April Kellett
- Guardianship Applications with Sonja Lusignan
- Panel Discussion on the Role of Counsel for Children
- Procedural Fairness with Diane Parken
- Charter Challenges with Hon. Judge P.E. Kvill
- Appealing Child Welfare Decisions by Paul Allyjan
“Because LESA doesn’t put on a lot of seminars in this area, I would really encourage any lawyer who practises in this area, or who is thinking about practising in this area, to attend the seminar,” says Sonja.
