The Alberta government has signed a new five-year governance agreement with Legal Aid Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta. The agreement extends Legal Aid Alberta’s funding and represents a shared understanding of maintaining a high-quality, sustainable, and independent legal aid program for Albertans.
In signing the new governance agreement, all parties have established a commitment to ensuring Alberta’s legal aid system continues to be stable, and available for those who require legal assistance/representation.
The new agreement came into effect on September 6, 2024, and will remain in place until September 5, 2029. Legal Aid Alberta’s 2024-2025 grant has been budgeted at $110 million. The agreement is an important pillar to ensuring that access to justice remain available in Alberta, and that legal aid be viewed as an important service for those who experience financial need.
