LESA Celebrates Our Volunteers at Social Media and You

Social media has been with us, in one form or another, since the 1970s, and in the form we know it since 1997. It’s not as new as you might think and it is not going anywhere. Like technology that came before it – eg. radio, television and “talking pictures”  – it has been greeted with skepticism from some, but embraced by many, and it is now a part of our world (particularly our business world) as we know it, like it or not. Therefore, in order to participate fully in our present culture, you need an online presence. It’s entirely up to you as to whether you choose to use it personally, but professionally, you do not exist if you do not have an online presence.

Social media tools help you connect your online presence with others. They help you get your message out there, and to find others with common – or compatible – interests and goals. They broadcast your brand and help you to build relationships with potential clients, colleagues and competitors (remember, the devil you know…). You should care about social media because it is a vital tool for building your business, for connecting with influencers and for branding your expertise.

Success in business is often attributed to “who you know, not what you know…” This is the value of social capital. Social media allows for contact and interaction with your professional network. It helps you strengthen ties and build your social capital, which can have a direct impact on your business – and your income.

Social media is constantly changing and evolving, which means it can be rather daunting to learn how to use it. A focused approach can be a good strategy to help you get started. Pick whichever platform appeals to you the most, create a profile, and learn from doing. Even a minimal time investment like ten minutes a day can quickly reap significant rewards. And remember, many people find social media to be a fun and rewarding enhancement to their lives – it shouldn’t feel like a chore!
