Congratulations to LESA volunteers The Honourable Dawn Pentelechuk and The Honourable Frederica L. Schutz. They, along with The Honourable Glenda A. Campbell and The Honourable Corina Dario, were appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta on November 8, 2013.
The Alberta judicial appointment announcement is as follows:
OTTAWA, November 8, 2013 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable Glenda A. Campbell, a lawyer with the Alberta Securities Commission in Calgary, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta to replace Madam Justice C.S. Phillips, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of July 26, 2013.
Madam Justice Campbell obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1980 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1983, both from the University of Alberta. She was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1984 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999.
Madam Justice Campbell has been vice-chair of the Alberta Securities Commission since 1999 and served in the Legal Services and Policy Development Section from 1989 to 1999. She was in private practice from 1984 to 1989 and her focus was administrative law, securities law, corporate law and family law.
Madam Justice Campbell has been a frequent speaker at the Canadian Bar Association Securities Law Subsection. She was a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary Law School from 2005 to 2008 and a volunteer judge for the Trial Advocacy Course.
The Honourable Dawn Pentelechuk, a lawyer with Cleall Barristers & Solicitors in Edmonton, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta to replace Madam Justice A.B. Moen (Edmonton), who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of September 29, 2013.
Madam Justice Pentelechuk obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1983 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1986, both from the University of Alberta. She was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1987 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2007. She has been a lawyer with Cleall Barristers & Solicitors since 2003. Prior to that, she practised with Schlosser Pentelechuk Wood and Duncan & Craig.
Madam Justice Pentelechuk has been a member of the Conduct Committee of the Law Society of Alberta since 2011 and is a past member of the Retention and Re-Engagement Task Force. She has been a volunteer for the Edmonton Community Legal Centre since 2006, an instructor for the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Development, a sessional instructor for the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta, and an instructor for the Alberta Bar Admission Course.
The Honourable Frederica L. Schutz, a lawyer with Emery Jamieson LLP in Edmonton, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta to replace Madam Justice L.D. Acton (Edmonton), who has elected to become a supernumerary judge as of December 1, 2013. This appointment is effective December 1, 2013.
Madam Justice Schutz has practised with Emery Jamieson LLP since 1991. Prior to that, she clerked with the Honourable Madam Justice Ellen I. Picard of the Court of Appeal of Alberta. Her areas of practice are civil litigation, personal injury, and commercial law.
Madam Justice Schutz has been a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta since 2008 and an appointee to the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Council, since 2006. She was a member of the Edmonton Bar Association, Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, Canadian Civil Trial Lawyers Association, Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Mortgage Loans Association of Alberta, City Arts Centre, and the Art Gallery of Alberta. She is the author of several papers and has lectured at numerous conferences.
The Honourable Corina Dario, a lawyer with Smart Technologies ULC in Calgary, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta to replace Madam Justice S.M. Bensler (Calgary), who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of August 4, 2013.
Madam Justice Dario obtained a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1992, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1995, and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2003. She was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1997.
Madam Justice Dario has been the director of Legal Affairs with Smart Technologies ULC in Calgary since 2008. Prior to that, she was senior commercial counsel and legal business partner, Canada and the UK, with Intuit Canada Ltd. in Edmonton and a senior associate with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Calgary, where her areas of practice were corporate law, commercial law and intellectual property law.
Madam Justice Dario is the secretary of the Canadian Bar Association, National Business Law Section, and past chair of the Alberta South Business Law Subsection. Â She has lectured for various organizations and participated in awareness groups through International Justice Mission.
