Justice Slatter was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2006. He was previously appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in 2001. Justice Slatter attended high school in Edmonton. He obtained a B. Comm. (with distinction) from the University of Alberta in1973, a LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 1977 (University Medal in Law), and a B.C.L. (First Class) from the University of Oxford in 1980. He was admitted to the Bar in Ontario (1979), Alberta (1981), and the Northwest Territories (1999).
After graduating, Justice Slatter clerked to the Honourable Mr. Justice R. Ritchie of the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1980, he joined the law firm of McCuaig Desrochers, in Edmonton, Alberta, as an articling student, where he became a partner and where he practiced law until his appointment to the Bench.
Justice Slatter was a contributor to Stevenson & Côté Guide to Civil Procedure (1992 and 1996) and the Civil Procedure Encyclopedia (2003). He has also contributed to several editions of Jones and de Villars Principles of Administrative Law, and wrote a study paper for the Law Reform Commission of Canada on Parliament and Administrative Agencies. In addition, he has been actively involved in continuing education for judges and lawyers and has authored several articles and seminar publications to this end.
Justice Slatter is currently chairing the Rules of Court Committee, and is the Edmonton List Manager for the Court of Appeal.
