Practice Management Online Module

The CPLED Practice Management online module begins on February 13, 2014, and includes one of the seven online competency evaluations taken by CPLED students.

Law Society of Alberta lawyer and CPLED facilitator Dan Chow was one of the subject matter experts who consulted on recent changes to this module, and he believes in the value of the changes.

The interactive questions “will get [students] to think and think about real life situations,” says Dan.

The recently updated Practice Management module has a different structure. Invigilators are now required to oversee the Practice Management Competency Evaluation, which consists of multiple choice and constructed response questions. To be an invigilator one must be at least 18 years of age, but not be related to the student or a current student in the CPLED Program. The invigilator must also either be, or be approved by, a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta or the of the Northwest Territories.

Since this is a new format, the CPLED Program has anticipated the following frequently asked questions:

Can my principal be my invigilator?

  • Yes. Any member with good standing at the Law Society can be your invigilator. This includes your principal.

My principal can’t be my invigilator; can some other person be my invigilator?

  •  Yes. As long as they fit the rules outlined above and a member of the Law Society of Alberta signs off of the administration form.

Can my invigilator observe more than one student?

  •  Yes! If there is more than one student doing the competency evaluation at the same time, there must be separation between the students and there must be a separate administration form completed for each.
