If done well, social media marketing can be very effective. The land of social media can also be very daunting when considering factors such as how to post for search engine optimization, what to post that will add value to your readers, how to audit your social media strategy to ensure there is a return on your investment, and more. Our upcoming Social Media Marketing for Legal Professionals is designed for legal professionals and will break down these factors into actionable steps to improve your social media plan. Brittany Koenig, our presenter for this program, is the digital media manager and senior paralegal for Family Law Solutions, Foster Dickson O’Brien (Calgary). We (virtually) sat down with Brittany to learn a little more about her, her work, and her experience in the land of social media.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have worked in the legal industry since 2012, after graduating from Mount Royal University with a Bachelor of Arts – Criminal Justice. Currently, I am employed with Family Law Solutions, Foster Dickson O’Brien, in Calgary, Alberta as the digital media manager and senior paralegal.
My diverse employment experience has contributed to my current successes and has afforded me the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, such as: an html-based interface designed as a desktop background for quick access to frequently used websites, software, and applications improving inquiry response times; creation of marketing materials; content creation and management of corporate social media profiles; and more. Over the years I have presented to management and executive teams, hosted lunch n’ learns, and supported in-house training and development.
What motivates you in your current role?
I’m an ambitious person. I love the law – researching case law, understanding complex arguments and cases, and learning about technical legal issues. I also enjoy supporting people in crisis. For me, I’m motivated working with highly productive and educated lawyers and staff to support clients who need help.
When it comes to social media, what areas of opportunity do you see in the legal community?
I’ll preface this by saying that I have only ever really worked in the family law sector and that my thoughts will likely reflect that. Legal practitioners have done well in embracing technology, especially when COVID-19 necessitated adaptions in day-to-day operations, but marketing in the family law sector can be a challenge.
In my experience, small to mid-sized firms lack the available resources to hire an experienced website developer, SEO expert, or social media manager and, typically, this necessitates having other staff manage the firms social media channels (if at all). For those attending Social Media Marketing for Legal Professionals, we will discuss the benefits of building your social media brand and curating optimized content for posts. This program will also discuss how to achieve a mix of content on your feed and provide tips for automating your posts for improved efficiency.
If done well, social media marketing can be very effective, but there needs to be consistency in the frequency of posts as well as mixed media content that interests and adds value to your followers.
Which social platforms do you use; and why?
Family Law Solutions can be found on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. We also have a blog on our website. In considering our social media strategy, we chose to build pages on these platforms as our target market consists of mainly millennials, Generation Xers, and Baby Boomers and our clients are typically in professional positions.
