Income levels and net worth are arguably the two most important considerations in spousal support awards. Before beginning any spousal support application, it is important to review current case trends with particular emphasis on the economic realities of the parties in question. This paper reviews the effect of the volatility in the price of oil and in the Alberta economy in spousal support awards in Alberta over the last five years.
