The federal government has announced the Canadian Renters’ Bill of Rights (the “Bill”) in the upcoming budget for 2024, in addition to other measures for renters.
The Bill will require landlords to disclose a history of apartment pricing and create nation-wide standard lease agreement. The implementation of the Bill will be made in partnership with the provinces and territories.
The Canadian Mortgage Charter will also be amended to ensure that rental payments count towards renters’ credit scores. The government will also be launching a $15 million Tenant Protection Fund to provide funding to legal aid and tenant advocacy organizations.
