It is with great sadness that we reflect on the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair.
In 2001, Murray Sinclair became the first Indigenous judge appointed to the highest court in Manitoba. Throughout his career, he was a significant advocate for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, and was integral in fostering reconciliation between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples in Canada. In 2009, he was appointed chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (“TRC“) in Canada. In 2015, the TRC published the 94 Calls to Action in their final report, which was foundational to initiating positive change in Indigenous communities.[1] In 2016, he was appointed as a Senator until 2021.
Honourable Murray Sinclair led a remarkable career and his dedication to defending the rights of Indigenous people has left a profound impact on Canadian law and society. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
