For solo and small firm practitioners, it’s a challenge to keep up with latest technology and updates in practice areas. That’s why so many practitioners were excited about the learning opportunities at the third annual Law and Practice Update on November 1 and 2. Not only did they get updates in four practice areas and obtain the latest information on new technology, but they enjoyed the chance to network with other legal professionals as well.
Second-time attendee Stephanie Dobson of Kindrachuk Dobson in Lloydminster especially appreciated the opportunities to connect with Law Society of Alberta practice advisors in regards to the technology presentations.
“The Law Society representatives were there, so right there in the room we were able to iron out some questions with respect to cloud computing and ethics around that. It was really helpful to us to be able to bounce questions not off just the presenters, but also off of other members within the audience.”
Andrew Cao, an associate at Kolthammer Batchelor Laidlaw LLP in Edmonton and first-time attendee at Law and Practice Update, found it affirming to discover that his firm is up to date on many of the issues that were being raised.
“It was also intriguing to learn about the various forms of technology out there to minimize expense and maximize efficiency in the work place. The combination of great food and the wealth of information and issues that are explored have an intrinsic value to it. Therefore, I can see myself attending again.”
The Law and Practice Update, which is presented every year in November, gives solo and small firm practitioners learning opportunities that would be difficult and expensive to discover on their own.
“The integration between the variety of different practice areas – real estate updates, family updates, civil litigation updates, wills & estates updates – and also the procedural matters are subjects that solo practitioners or small firms don’t often get,” explains Stephanie. “We don’t have the resources to find out that information. I don’t even know how I would have ever learned that information. When you talk to consultants, they say talk to your tech department and I say,’ I don’t have a tech department. I am the tech department!’”
